Science and art

Both CIMR and the neighbouring MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit houses a collection of science-inspired artwork from Odra Noel. As an artist who originally trained as a doctor, Odra uses art as a medium to focus on the “natural merging of scientific observation and artistic appreciation of the natural world”(www.odranoel.eu/). One of her pieces, exhibited at the Royal Society in London last year, depicts human tissues implicated in disease as a world map and highlights a key theme of our research: to better understand the cellular basis of human disease. Other pieces illustrate tissues that are central to our research, including blood, acinar tissue, neurons and immune cells. We hope that these striking additions to the institute highlight the emphasis that CIMR places on creative and innovative approaches to research.

The purchase of individual pieces for CIMR was made possible through the generous support of Carl Zeiss Ltd (The Map of Health (2013), below) and Andor Technology (The Mother Cell (2014), top right).
