Cambridge Institute for Medical Research

Last week, CIMR hosted four sixth-form students taking part in the Aspiring Scientists Training Programme, run by the Gurdon Institute. The programme is targeted at young people from disadvantaged backgrounds or who have barriers to education, encouraging and enabling them to apply to university. This year, as well as at the Gurdon Institute, there were placements in CIMR, MBU, IMS and the Sainsbury Laboratory, with a total of over 30 students taking part.

Students spent a week in their host labs, completing a short project and gaining valuable experience of a working academic research environment. They also attended a variety of workshops, talks and demonstrations, and, staying in St. Catharine’s or Pembroke College, got to sample student life. At the end of the week they presented their lab work to fellow students and lab members from all the host labs. We really enjoyed hosting the students and are already looking forward to next year's intake!
