Cambridge Institute for Medical Research

Four multidisciplinary research consortia have recently been funded by UKRI, Versus Arthritis and Eli Lily to investigate chronic pain. The ADVANTAGE Consortium is led by CIMR’s Prof. Geoff Woods and includes other Cambridge colleagues and co-investigators from London and Edinburgh.  The research will focus on extremes of visceral pain: collecting cohorts of individuals living with it; using wearable technologies to define its real world effects; seeking the psychological, autoantibody and genetic drivers; and defining the molecular signatures of each visceral organ’s nociceptors. With Prof. Woods’s particular interests in understanding the biology underlying pain, the Consortium’s aim is to introduce precision medicine and new therapies into this poorly-understood and poorly-treatable condition.
