Cambridge Institute for Medical Research

We were very pleased to co-host Inspiring Scientists at CIMR and MRC MBU (ISAC/M) in partnership with the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit (MBU) and St Catharine’s College, Cambridge.

Eleven Year 12 students from Cambridgeshire state schools took part in the four-day work experience programme during February’s school half-term. The first three days were spent at the CIMR and the MBU with seminars, equipment demonstrations and time spent taking part in lab research. Day four of ISAC/M took place at St Catharine’s, with information about applying to the University, life as a student as well as mentoring sessions. A highlight of the day was the excellent standard of presentations from the ISAC/M students describing what they had worked on in their labs at CIMR and MBU.

ISAC/M was a free, widening participation programme to open the world of university scientific research and inspire Year 12 students who are curious about science, medicine and research as future careers, but who may have reduced opportunities, or for those with perceived barriers to application and entry to Cambridge and similar Universities which may be more limiting than their actual abilities or potential.
